Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers are medical device implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in helping to create a smoother and fuller appearance in the face, including nasolabial folds, cheeks and lips and for increasing the volume of the back of the hand. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the bodyTypes of Dermal fillers
The most popular category of Dermal fillers is Hyaluronic acid. Each type works in a slightly different way with varying results. Hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers include:
- Belotero Balance
- Juvederm Voluma XC
- Juvederm XC
- Juvederm Ultra XC
- Juvederm Volbella XC
- Prevelle Silk
- Restylane Silk
- Restylane Refyne
- Restylane Defyne
The effect of Restylane/ Perlane last between six months and one year, but the effects of Juvederm Voluma have been clinically proven to last up to two years.
Volbella is the latest FDA-approved inject able added to the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers. Its results typically last between 1 year to 18 months, which is why Volbella is known as the longest-lasting lip filler .However most patients would return for maintenance before the product completely disappears to optimize the overall contour, shape, and look. This non-surgical lip augmentation treatment is designed to plump the lips and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, also known as Perioral Rhytids or Perioral lines.
Synthetic Wrinkle Fillers
This smaller category of fillers includes lab-made substances and is not found naturally in the skin. These fillers have the side effects similar to Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as redness, swelling, or bruising at the site of the injection. Other side effects include nodules or bumps under the skin that can be seen and felt and that, in rare instances, may require surgery to remove.
The benefits include a longer-lasting effect. And at least one filler offers semi-permanent filling of lines and creases. Synthetic wrinkle fillers include:
Collagen Wrinkle Fillers
Scientists made the first wrinkle fillers from a purified form of collagen extracted mostly from cows. Although it showed good results with a natural looking fill but the results were not long lasting. Most collagen injections began to break down as early as 1 month after treatment. As these fillers were made from an animal source, they also had a higher rate of allergic reactions.
New forms of synthetic collagens are making these injections safer and more useful to a wider range of people. Although the results don't last as long as other fillers, but the results is more natural looking.
Side effects of collagen injections include some risk of allergic reaction (mostly for those still using cow sources), as well as bruising and redness at the site of the injection.Collagen injections include:
Autologous Wrinkle Fillers
Fat is the most commonly used substance in this category. Your own fat is surgically removed from your thighs, buttocks, or stomach, treated, and then injected at the required area. Two procedures are required one to remove the fat and one to inject it. Both procedures can be done in one visit. The fat purification steps done in the lab are costly and time-consuming. Results can be semi-permanent, and a series of injections are needed over time.
Side Effects of Dermal Filler
Side effects of Dermal Fillers are rare but can include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. The filler may also show up under the skin as tiny bumps.
Commonly treated areas of Dermal Filler:
- the lines under your eyes that make your eyes look tired. A loss of volume in the area, a loss of tissue elasticity or a mild reduction in bone density could all be causes of concern.
With ageing we lose subcutaneous fat which can result in a loss of volume and elasticity to the face thereby highlighting hollow cheek bones, and the presence of excess skin resulting in sunken cheeks. This causes gaunt and tired-look. Dermal fillers can be injected into this area to plump out the face with natural volume and a gentle lift.
Lips & vermillion border
The lips can be injected with dermal filler either in the body of the lip to boost fullness or the border of the lips to increase definition.
A perfect alternative to a surgical chin implant, is a non-surgical chin augmentation achieved with dermal fillers. Fillers will help define the jaw line and though the results are only temporary it is a great way to see what can be achieved surgically.
Fillers are injected into the nose to smooth out slight bumps in the bridge of the nose, or rectify a crooked line of the nose (particularly in profile view) and even cartilage irregularities at the tip of the nose all in less than 15 minutes!
- The pronounced crease that runs from the corners of the mouth to down along the chin. It can also refer to nasolabial folds occurring around the top of the mouth.
- The appearance of vertical lip lines over time commonly referred to as “smoker's lines” or “lipstick lines”. These stubborn wrinkles are caused by a variety of factors, including age, genetics, repetitive lifestyle habits, and in some individuals, smoking.
