Chemical Peel is a procedure for improving the texture of the skin and to smoothen and even out the tone of the skin. The chemical peel solution induces a controlled injury to the skin. These are intended to remove the topmost layer of the skin. Resulting wound healing process begins to regenerate new tissues and the dead skin (topmost layer) eventually peels off.
The chemical peels reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth. Chemical peels can treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and mild acne scars. They reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) that can be due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills. The chemical peels improve the overall look and feel of skin.
Types of Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can be broadly defined according to the depth of penetration in the skin. They are categorized as superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels do not damage skin below the epidermis, the most superficial skin layer. Medium peels may reach to the superficial layer of the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin. Deep peels generally reach the deeper layers of the dermis. The depth of damage depends on the nature and concentration of the chemicals in the peeling solution and the length of time they are permitted to interact with the skin. The type of chemical peel used depends on the nature of the skin problem to be treated.
Popular chemicals in peeling solutions include retinoids (tretinoin dissolved in propylene glycol), alpha-hydroxy acids (lactic acid and glycolic acid), beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), trichloroacetic acid, and phenol (carbolic acid).
What to expect from chemical peel procedure.
Pre - peel skin preparation is required in some peels for other peels no special skin preparation is needed. During the chemical peel procedure firstly the face is cleansed thoroughly and then the chemical peel solution is applied. It may give a mild stinging sensation which can be easily dealt with the help of fan aided evaporation or cold compresses. After leaving the peel solution for the required time duration it is cleaned with a neutralizing agent. Immediately after the peel procedure the skin might look slightly red and inflamed. This usually settles in 2-4 hours. The topmost layer starts to peel off in 3-7 days time depending on the peel solution used.
Post Peel Precautions
It is of utmost importance that the post peel instructions are followed properly. Since the top layer of skin is peeling off and a new layer of fresh skin is emerging, sun exposure should be minimum. Sun protection lotion/ cream, wide rim hat sun goggles should be worn whenever stepping out in sun .Proper hydration should be maintained for that drink plenty of fluids. The skin should be kept well moisturized otherwise the dry skin would cause irritation and itching.

A person with sun damaged skin, uneven pigmentation, and/or actinic keratoses are the ideal candidates for a chemical peel. Sun damage results in fine wrinkling, skin thinning, sun spots, uneven pigmentation and is also known to be a very early precursor to skin cancer.
